KATMB MEMBERS: - ALERT- URGENT INFORMATION ! You will find on this page the following information: What is massage? An information sheet that was written for the purpose of informing others as to why we are apposed to licensure. Who are massage professionals? I know the Kansas Board of Healing Arts statue 65-2872 (f) doesn’t begin to cover who we are. It does give us the freedom to choose where we work as our training allows, Day Spa, Dr. Office, home etc. It allows employers to choose us. Clients can choose where they want to go. Licensure always increases the cost of doing business, and would have to be passed on to your clients. Included are two membership forms and a 3-fold brochure that includes all bodyworkers. Ask everyone that you know to join us. Be sure that each new membership form includes a brochure for the Code of Ethics. Perhaps you know of a former member that might renew? Share a renewal form with them. If you have e-mail please send me your address at gum09@cox.net so our response time can be faster. Feel free to copy any of the above and pass it on to all massage therapist and bodyworkers that you know. A licensure of massage therapist would affect all bodyworkers in the state of Kansas, directly or indirectly. We are prepared for the next Legislative session. So, keep the faith. You can have confidence that we are known to the Legislators. Contact me if you have any questions or concerns. Talk to you soon. Denise, Chairperson

Massage is the manipulation of the soft tissues of the human body with the hand, foot, arm, or elbow. It is not physical therapy nor spinal manipulation. WHO ARE MASSAGE PROFESSIONALS? Persons who massage for the purpose of relaxation, muscle conditioning, or figure improvement, provided no drugs are used and such persons do not hold themselves out to be physicians or healers (KS Board of Healing Arts 65-2872) DO WE NEED A LAW REQUIRING LICENSING FOR MASSAGE IN KANSAS? No, we do not. WHY NOT? The only reason to establish a licensing law is to protect the public. DOES THE PUBLIC NEED PROTECTION FROM MASSAGE? No. There is no proof that any person in Kansas has been harmed by massage. Therefore, licensing would impose a level of unneeded bureaucracy upon its citizens. WHO WOULD BENEFIT FROM LICENSURE OF MASSAGE IN KANSAS? Massage schools prepared to provide the mandated education required by licensure; testing organizations administering certification exams that might be required by licensure; massage professionals who may be able to participate in practices qualified to receive payments from health insurance companies by complying with licensure requirements. WHO WOULD BE NEGATIVELY AFFECTED BY MASSAGE LICENSURE? Massage practitioners who wish to give massage and bodywork as stated in 65-2872; professionals who have established practices, but would be unable to meet the proposed educational standards or testing requirements that legislative action would impose; and last but not least, massage consumers, whose choices would be limited to only those practitioners who were able to comply with the law and whose services were still affordable. BOTTOM LINE: LET THE PUBLIC CONTINUE TO CREDENTIAL THE BUSINESS OF MASSAGE IN KANSAS. WE DON’T NEED TO FIX SOMETHING THAT’S NOT BROKEN.
